Senior IRS Officer Ananya Ray Takes Over As CBEC Member

New Delhi: Senior IRS officer Ananya Ray took over the charge as the new Member in the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), the apex policy making body of the indirect taxes.

Ananya Ray was appointed a new Member of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).

A CBEC Member post is equivalent to a Special Secretary rank status in the government.

Ray, a 1980-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Central Excise) was appointed as member of the CBEC following her promotion to Principal Chief Commissioner from the Chief Commissioner on the same day.

The Post of Principal Chief Commissioner of Customs and Central excise is also now on a par with the Special Secretary and DGP under cadre restructuring of CBEC in the top pay scale of Rs 80,000 per month.

The vacancy of CBEC Member was created following retirement of Ashok K Kaushal, a 1979 IRS officer, who had taken over as the member of the board in May, 2015.

“Ms Ananya Ray took over as the new member of CBEC, succeeding Ashok K Kaushal, who laid down office on last Wednesday” a Finance Ministry official said.

Ray was serving as the Chief Commissioner, Customs Preventive, Delhi with additional charge Chief Commissioner, AR, CESTAT, Delhi before taking over as the member of CBEC.

Ray worked in various segments in the field formation of the CBEC in various capacities.

Roy, a Post Graduate in Arts and Philosophy, will superannuate in August 2017.

With joining of Roy in CBEC, all vacancies of six Members have again been filled, the other members of the board are — Najib Shah, V S Krishnan, Neerja Shah, Vanaja N Sarna and Ram Tirath.

The post of CBEC Chairman is lying vacant since July this year, following the retirement of Kaushal Srivastava.
Najib Shah took over as acting Chairman of the CBEC after the retirement of Srivastava.

Shah also look after the work of Director General of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in addition to his CBEC Board works.

The CBEC has six members apart from the Chairman and is responsible for framing policy and administrative issues related to indirect taxes of the Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax departments.
